EU-Project: Lightweight steel Leaf Springs with improved durability and reliability – LEAFSLIM

Dr.-Ing. Alexander Klumpp

Motivation

Optimization of leaf springs to reduce weight of heavy duty vehicles in order to reduce emissions to fulfill EURO-VI standard.

Objectives

  • Development of new steels for lightweight leaf spring applications
  • Optimization of the residual stress profiles through innovative stress- and warmpeening processes
  • Improvement of the lifetime of the final components
  • Development of a simulation framework to predict residual stresses

Methods

  • Identification of new steels
  • Experimental evaluation of the effect of peening strategies, measurement of residual stresses and fatigue testing of test samples
  • Selection of the best peening strategy and experimental analysis of leaf springs
  • Simulation Model of residual stresses based on the developed models by means of the method of finite elements
