Applied Nanotribology

Project description

The  “Applied Nanotribology group” is investigating experimentally the influence of nanoscale effects on the friction and wear behavior of applied tribological systems. We are looking especially at the evolution of the topography of rough surfaces, the subsurface microstructure and the generation of wear particles.

Sliding surfaces can be found both in nature (e.g. in joints) and in technical systems ranging from micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) to ship engines the size of a family home. During the sliding process, metallic surfaces undergoe a complex dynamic evolution which we believe to be the key for understanding sliding friction and wear. Our main goal is to observe theses dynamic processes on the nanoscale directly (on-line) and to link them to the friction and wear behavior.
