PhD – Thesis: ‘Mechanisms of tribologically-induced oxidation’

Tribologically-induced oxidation is investigated with a model system consisting of high-purity copper in contact with sapphire spheres in a controlled environment. State-of the art techniques such as scanning and transmission electron microscopy, atom probe tomography and X-ray dispersive spectroscopy are applied to investigate the fundamental mechanisms of tribo-oxidation. Eventually, this knowledge will allow for a strategic design of materials more resistant to tribo-oxidation. In addition, one might in the future be able to strategically make use of or alter such tribologically-induced chemical processes.

Joint project: An ontology for materials science

Development of an example-ontology for materials science within a specific use-case scenario. Project with the Fraunhofer IWM, Freiburg and the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), Berlin.
