IAM participates in Refrabund The DFG research group "Multifunctional, coarse-grained, refractory composites and material composites for large-volume key components in high-temperature processes" (Refrabund) involves not only the TU Freiberg but also various subinstitutes of the IAM (AWP, KWT, WK).
Bertha Benz Prize 2019 Almut Albiez (IAM-WBM) was awarded the Bertha Benz Prize 2019 for her outstanding dissertation during the Bertha Benz Lecture at the SRH University of Applied Sciences in Heidelberg.
Adolf Martens Prize Dr. Christian Greiner (IAM-CMS) was awarded the Adolf Martens Prize of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM).
New Research Training Group The DFG funds the new joint research training group on high-temperature composites of the partners KIT, TU Darmstadt and DECHEMA. Spokesperson of the "MatCom-ComMat" research training group is Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Heilmaier (IAM-WK).
Erwin Schrödinger Prize 2019 Dr. Susanne Wagner and Prof. Dr. Michael Hoffmann (IAM-KWT) received the research prize for the elucidation of the properties of modern perovskite solar cells.

Young Scientist Award At the "1st International Conference on Advanced Surface Enhancement" (INCASE 2019) in Singapore, the contribution of Mr. M.Sc. Michael Seitz (IAM-WK) "Mechanical Investigations on Composite Peened Aluminium" (authors: M. Seitz, K.A. Weidenmann) was awarded.


German Science Slam Championship 2018 Dr. Anastasia August (IAM-CMS) could take the (shared) second place at the German Science Slam Championship on November 24th, 2018 in Wiesbaden. In her contribution "Overcoming thermal resistance" she explained the principle of an autonomous heat storage module based on paraffin.
Jens Reiser receives SOFT Innovation Prize Dr.-Ing. Jens Reiser (IAM-AWP) was awarded the prize at SOFT-2018 (Sicily). He received the first prize of the SOFT Innovation Prize of the European Commission for his contribution "Ductile tungsten (W): Novel rolling technique opens a new era for commercial exploitation of tungsten".

Astrid Pundt Professor at the IAM Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Astrid Pundt holds the chair "Material Characterization" at IAM-WK since mid-June 2018. Previously, she was a professor at the Institute for Material Physics at the University of Göttingen, funded by the Heisenberg Programme.
Faculty teaching award 2018 for Anastasia August On suggestion of the student council the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has awarded Dr. Anastasia August (IAM-CMS) the Faculty Teaching Award 2018 for her lecture "Microstructure Simulation". The award was presented during the KIT annual celebration on April 19.

Ruth Schwaiger Meeting Chair of the MRS Spring Meeting 2019 Dr. Ruth Schwaiger (IAM-WBM) was appointed Meeting Chair of the Materials Research Society (MRS) alongside Yuping Bao (University of Alabama), Bruce Dunn (University of California), Subodh Mhaisalkar (Nanyang Technological University) and Subhash L. Shinde (University of Notre Dame). The MRS Spring Meeting took place on April 22-26, 2019 in Phoenix, Arizona. Read more about the meeting
Michael Schönleber receives Carl Freudenberg Prize Mr. Dipl.-Ing. Michael Schönleber (IAM-ET) was awarded the Carl Freudenberg Prize 2017 (1st place) for his dissertation "Method for characterizing the low-frequency behavior of lithium-ion batteries". The prize, which is endowed with 10,000 euros, serves to promote science at KIT. It is awarded every two years. More
European Research Council Consolidator Grant to Christian Greiner The aim of the working group around Dr. Christian Greiner (IAM-CMS) is to reduce the consumption of energy and raw materials by reducing friction and wear. The European Research Council (ERC) has now awarded Dr. Greiner with a Consolidator Grant and will fund him with two million euros over the next five years. Link to KIT press release


Sosman Award 2017 presented to Michael J. Hoffmann

Prof. Michael J. Hoffmann (IAM-KWT) was presented with the Robert B. Sosman Award at the Material Science & Technology 2017 in Pittsburgh. The award is the highest honor bestowed by the Basic Science Division of the American Ceramic Society in recognition of outstanding achievements in basic research. MoreExternal Link

Award of the Faculty Teaching Prize 2017 Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kay André Weidenmann (IAM-WK) and Dr. rer. nat. Joachim Binder (IAM-KWT) were awarded the Fritz Weidenhammer Prize of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the KIT anniversary celebration for their outstanding teaching work, in particular the lecture "Materials Process Technology". New method for recording boundary layer conditions Prof. Volker Schulze (IAM-WK) coordinates the DFG priority program "Surface conditioning in machining processes". The aim is to research a new machining method to improve the reliability and lifetime of components. Further InformationExternal Link
Winner of the study award of the company Dörrenberg Edelstahl


Anna-Maria Jung won the first place of the study award of the company Dörrenberg Edelstahl. The mechanical engineering student convinced the jury with her bachelor thesis written at IAM-WK and her presentation entitled "Investigations on the influence of external stresses on the tempering behaviour of martensitic 42CrMo4".
Peter Gumbsch Chairman of the Scientific Commission of the German Science Council


Peter Gumbsch (IAM-CMS) took over the chairmanship of the scientific commission of the German Science Council. This advises the Federal Government and the governments of the Länder on issues relating to the development of content and structure of higher education, science and research. Britta Nestler receives the Leibniz Prize Prof. Dr. Britta Nestler (IAM-CMS) was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for her contribution to computer-aided materials research. The prize is endowed with 2.5 million € and is the most important research award in Germany. Link KIT press release
New X-ray microscope in operation at MZE A new large-scale facility was put into operation in the Materials Science Center (MZE) of KIT. With the Zeiss Xradia 520 Versa, the participating institutes IAM-WET , IAM-KWT, and MVM-VM now have a high-resolution X-ray microscope of the latest generation for non-destructive analysis of porous materials at their disposal.
Opening of the Materials Science Centre The Materials Science Center (MZE) brings together 150 researchers from chemistry, physics, materials science, electrical engineering and process engineering under one roof. Materials Science in the Lead Nationwide In the NTU Ranking , KIT takes first place among German universities in the subjects natural sciences (worldwide rank 53) and engineering sciences (worldwide rank 80). The subject Material Sciences is ranked 1st in Germany and 62nd worldwide. more
Science Slam victories for Anastasia August The mathematician Dr. Anastasia August (IAM-CMS) won the 7th Wiesbaden "Science Slam" (link to the Wiesbadener Kurier) . With her lecture "Storing heat like a bear" she already won the "Women in Science Slam" in Cologne in 2015 and the 1st prize at the "Climate Special Science Slam" in Erlangen. Poster prize for Mr. Simone Pupeschi Mr. Simone Pupeschi (IAM-KWT) received one of the three PhD poster prizes at SOFT 2016 (29th Symposium on Fusion Technology, Prague) for his poster "Effective thermal conductivity of advanced ceramic breeder pebble beds".
Sparkassen-Environment-Prize 2015 For his dissertation "Synthesis and Characterization of Lithium Metal Fluorides as Positive Electrode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries", Dr.-Ing. Georg Lieser (IAM-KWT) is awarded the Sparkassen-Umwelt-Preis 2015 at the annual conference of the KIT Climate and Environment Center on July 25, 2016. more
Höfler doctoral prize for Kathrin Krannich Dr.-Ing. Kathrin Krannich (IAM-AWP) was awarded the "Dr.-Ing-Willy-Höfler-Doctoral Prize 2015" for the best dissertation of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering with production, measurement or control engineering objectives. The award ceremony was held on the KIT Mechanical Engineering Day by the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans-Jörg Bauer. The prize is endowed with 4,000 €.
Thomas Hupfer Receives Poster Prize The 1st prize in the poster competition of the 12th International Symposium on Systems with Fast Ionic Transport (ISSFIT-12, Kaunas, Lithuania) went to Mr. Thomas Hupfer (IAM-KWT) for the poster "Li+ diffusion in LATP solid ionic conductors studied by neutron diffraction".
ITK Student Award for Leonie Tatzel At the IAM-ET Institute Seminar at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Leonie Tatzel, master student of the Electrical Engineering and Information Technology course, was awarded the ITK Student Award.
Christian Friedrich Schönbein Award for Sebastian Dierickx The Christian Friedrich Schönbein Medal in Silver was awarded to Mr. M. Sc. Sebastian Dierickx (IAM-WET) during the "European SOFC & SOE Forum 2016" in Lucerne. His scientific contribution "Electrochemical Analysis of Sulfur Poisoning in Ni/8YSZ Cermet Anodes" was awarded.
Nature Materials: World's smallest truss Metamaterials for the construction of microscopic 3D trusses (developed at IAM-WBM) achieve higher specific strength The picture of the smallest truss in the world was named Picture of the Month April by the daily newspaper Badische Neueste Nachrichten (BNN) more
Professor Peter Gumbsch new member of the NAE The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) of the USA accepted Peter Gumbsch as a new member. The Professor of Mechanics of Materials is being honored with the election for his innovative research work on multiscale material modeling. more
Katrin Schulz selected for funding in the Wrangell Habilitation Programme Dr. Katrin Schulz (IAM-CMS) was selected for the Margarete von Wrangell Habilitation Programme. Through this programme, the state of Baden-Württemberg supports outstanding female researchers on their way to professorship. The engineer and materials scientist works on the modelling of plastic deformations in metallic materials on the microscale. more

Ellen Ivers-Tiffée appointed Fellow of the University of Tokyo

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ellen Ivers-Tiffée (IAM-ET) has been appointed Fellow of the School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo - in recognition of her scientific merits in the field of functional ceramics of high-temperature fuel cells (SOFC) and lithium-ion batteries and in view of her longstanding fruitful cooperation with the School of Engineering in research and scientific education.
