The department of Mechanics of Materials 1 (WM 1) conducts research in the fields of mechanical, but also other physical properties, as well as reliability of materials and systems of nano- and microtechnology.

Experimental work is carried out with defined mechanical loads at dimensions in the micro- and nanometer range. Different, highly developed methods for microscopic in situ observation and characterization, but also structuring are used.

Modelling focuses on coupling phenomena using continuum mechanical, micromechanical and phase field methods. Probabilistic methods are used for reliability assessment and the evaluation of experimental data.
