You are interested in studying the structures and properties of materials and you have strong interest in the combination of engineering and natural sciences. Then this is exactly the right place for you!
Übersicht IAM-MMS

In the research group “Microstructure Modeling and Simulation” led by Prof. Britta Nestler, we offer a broad and methodologically diverse selection of thesis projects covering various fields of materials science.

The IAM‑MMS investigates and develops modern modeling and simulation methods for analyzing microstructural changes in materials under the influence of a wide range of physical processes. Combined with data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, data‑ and simulation‑driven approaches are created that efficiently advance the development of new high‑performance materials.

Our educational program includes lectures, exercises, labs, research seminars, as well as numerous opportunities for active participation in research—from student assistant (HiWi) work and project assignments to bachelor’s and master’s theses.

The methodological scope ranges from mathematical modeling and numerical simulation to the implementation of virtual research environments. In doing so, our research fields integrate materials science, mechanical engineering, physics, computer science, and mathematics, covering, among others, the following topics:

  • Multiphysics modeling (mass and heat transport, mechanics, fluid flow, electrochemistry)
  • Systematic simulation studies to analyze process‑structure‑property relationships
  • Development of algorithms for microstructure reconstruction and evaluation of measurement and simulation data
  • Optimization and parallelization of numerical C/C++ solvers on high‑performance computers
  • Data analysis, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and modern research data management

Do you want to shape your studies in a practical, research‑oriented, and forward‑looking way?
Then take the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary team on current research projects. The topics can be tailored to your specific academic focus. We are also happy to offer additional, customized topics upon request.
