Curriculum Vitae

Peter Gumbsch studierte Physik an der Universität Stuttgart und Wirtschaftswissenschaften an der Fernuniversität Hagen. Seine Doktorarbeit fertigte er am Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung und den Sandia National Laboratories, Livermore an und promovierte 1991 an der Universität Stuttgart. Nach Forschungsaufenthalten am Imperial College, London und der Oxford University etablierte er am Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung die Arbeitsgruppe »Modellierung und Simulation von Dünnschichtphänomenen«. Im Jahr 2001 übernahm er den Lehrstuhl für Werkstoffmechanik am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie KIT und die Leitung des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Werkstoffmechanik IWM in Freiburg.

Seine Forschungsaktivitäten konzentrieren sich auf die werkstoffmechanische Modellbildung und Simulation von mikroskopischen und atomistischen über mesoskopische Ansätze bis zur Bauteilbewertung. Ziel ist, durch seine Ansätze Werkstoffe in ihrer inneren Struktur und in ihrem Verhalten genauer zu beschreiben, um Bauteile sicherer, zuverlässiger und langlebiger zu machen. Zur Integration von Werkstoffmodellierung in die Produktentwicklungen wird von ihm und seinen Mitarbeitern Pionierarbeit geleistet. Ein aktuelles Interessensgebiet ist die Erforschung von Reibungs- und Verschleißprozessen, um die Material- und Energieeffizienz in technischen Systemen zu verbessern.

Er erhielt zahlreiche Preise und Ehrungen darunter 1998 den Masing-Gedächtnispreis und 2007 den Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Preis der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft sowie 2013 den DGM-Preis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Materialkunde. 2009 wurde er zum Hector Fellow und 2011 zum Advisory Professor der Shanghai Jiao Tong Universität, China ernannt. Er ist Mitglied der Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina und der National Academy of Engineering NAE der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. 2015 wurde er in den Wissenschaftsrat berufen und war von 2017 bis 2021 Vorsitzender von dessen Wissenschaftlicher Kommission.

Seit 2019 ist er als Vorsitzender des Fraunhofer Verbunds MATERIALS Mitglied im Präsidium der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. 2016 bis 2020 war er gewähltes Mitglied im Fraunhofer Senat.
