Job description

The Institute for Applied Materials – Mechanics of Materials and Interfaces (IAM-MMI) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) strives for a fundamental understanding, prediction, and optimization of mechanisms responsible for the degradation of advanced structural and functional material systems. Our materials research portfolio comprises, among others, materials required for the energy transition, i.e. for energy conversion and storage, as well as advanced structural materials.

You will be part of a newly formed research group comprised of six researchers, undertaking fundamental research by investigating the mechanisms responsible for hydrogen embrittlement based on in situ small scale mechanical testing. As a successful candidate, you will be tasked with establishing a new detector system to measure the local distribution of the hydrogen isotope Tritium. You and your group will use this detector while performing in situ small scale mechanical testing on focused ion beam (FIB) milled samples in order to correlate the fundamental mechanisms of hydrogen embrittlement with the local hydrogen content.

Your tasks comprise:

  • Adopt a Multi-Channel-Plate (MCP) detector system for measuring the local Tritium content.
  • Develop software tools to analyze the obtained data.
  • Validate the spatial and chemical resolution of the MCP setup.
  • Integrate the MCP-System in a state-of-the-art SEM for in situ micromechanical testing.

As a postdoctoral researcher you will be part of a newly formed research group comprised of six researchers, undertaking fundamental research investigating the mechanisms responsible for hydrogen embrittlement based on in situ small scale mechanical testing. You and your group will develop a detector imaging the local distribution of the hydrogen isotope Tritium. Subsequently, you will use the detector while performing in situ small scale mechanical testing on focused ion beam (FIB) milled samples in order to correlate the fundamental mechanisms of hydrogen embrittlement with the local hydrogen content.

Your tasks comprise:

  • Development of a device for Tritium plasma-charging.
  • FIB based micromachining for sample preparation.
  • Characterization of the local Tritium distribution by SIMS and APT.
  • Scientific paper writing.
  • Organization of scientific events like seminars, lab visits and summer schools.

Personal qualification

  • university degree (Masters / Diplom (Uni)), ideally in physics oder materials science with a PhD degree
  • Experiences in hydrogen embrittlement, micromechanics, electron microscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy and/or atom probe tomography are desired.

Sie nehmen Telefonate und Anfragen entgegen, empfangen Besucher und kümmern sich um die Ablage und Archivierung von Dokumenten. 

Personal qualification

Sie verfügen über eine abgeschlossene Berufsausbildung im Büromanagement mit nachfolgender Berufserfahrung und bringen Kenntnisse in der Buchhaltung mit. Außerdem verfügen Sie über einen sicheren Umgang mit MS Office-Anwendungen (Word, Excel, Outlook) und in elektronischen Verwaltungsprogrammen wie SAP-SRM und Super X. Des Weiteren zeichnen Sie sich durch gute deutsche und englische Sprachkenntnisse in Wort und Schrift aus.

Micromechanical characterization of grain boundary slip

Job description

The Institute for Applied Materials – Mechanics of Materials- and Interfaces (IAM-MMI) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) strives for a fundamental understanding, prediction and optimization of mechanisms responsible for the degradation of advanced functional material systems. Our material portfolio comprises, among others, materials required for the energy transition, i.e. for energy conversion and storage as well as advanced structural materials.

Within the next three years, the successfull candidate shall develop a fundamental, quantitative understanding of grain boundary sliding in model materials using experimental micromechanics. Two main experimental techniques will be used:

  • Micro pillar manufacturing using a state-of-the-art focused ion beam microscope (FIB). The FIB is equipped with a femtosecond laser or low damage laser ablation
  • In situ small scale mechanical testing at non-ambient temperatures usind a field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with a high temperature nanoidenter.

Through the combination of aforementioned techniques with data processing (e.g. digital image correlation), the shear stress vs. shear strain behavior of a single grain boundary should be measured at the micron scale for the first time.

Personal qualification

Candidates must have a university degree (diploma (Uni) / Master) with a PhD focus on physics, materials science or mechanical engineering. Experiences in microstructural properties of materials, electron microscopy and mechanical testing are beneficial.
